About Us

Indigenous Alberta

Indigenous Alberta was originally created as a resource for anyone wanting to do research into the Indigenous communities and cultures of Canada, particularly through Indigenous methodologies and through an Indigenous lens. However, I wanted to expand upon that and create a one-stop online space for all things Indigenous in the province of Alberta. Let's work together to make this the most comprehensive and informative online space for all of Alberta's Indigenous communities.

Indigenous Research Methodologies

Indigenous Research Methodologies was the original focus of this website, because it's an important subject that needs more attention. How do we even define Indigenous Research Methodologies? According to Shawn Wilson of the University of Sydney in Australia, "Indigenous research methodology means talking about relational accountability. As a researcher you are answering to all your relations when you are doing research" (Canadian Journal of Native Education, 2001, p. 177). Cora Weber-Pillwax of the University Alberta distinguishes "between Indigenous research methodology that may be selected as a methodology by all researchers and Indigenous research conducted by Indigenous scholars" (Journal of Educational Thought, 1999).
